Red Feb Month

Written by Kaytlyn Shuck - Physiotherapist -

Did you know this month people are encouraged to put on their red shirts to support awareness for people they know who have had a cardiac event and promote healthy living and fundraising for research.

Red Feb is run by Heart Research Australia for research and to raise community awareness of heart disease and its impacts.

Did you know - Heart disease is Australia’s leading single cause of death, with 18,590 deaths attributed to heart disease in Australia in 2017. Heart disease kills one Australian every 28 minutes.

We thought this was a great one for the team at NAP to give a shout to because guess what one of the most essential parts of preventing or managing a cardiac event ….. yep you guessed it EXERCISE!!!

No matter you age keeping your heart healthy, is one of the most important things you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease. By improving your lifestyle, including your diet and level of fitness, you can minimise your risk of getting cardiovascular disease. Even if you have two or more risk factors, you can still make changes that will reduce your chances of developing heart problems.

Here is some examples of how exercise helps us:

  • Exercise uses and clears stress hormones

  • It improves blood flow and oxygen delivery

  • It keeps blood vessels flexible

  • It causes anti-inflammatory substances to be released from muscles

  • It helps manage blood sugar and cholesterol

  • It supports better sleep

  • It trains blood vessels to handle pressure and reduce spikes

  • It improves heart recovery and lowers risk of irregular heartbeats

  • It increases blood flow and supports healthy vessels

  • It helps control cholesterol and blood sugar for up to two days after exercise

  • It improves nervous system balance

Starting to exercise and move for heart health doesn’t have to be big and there are so many support options available to support you on this journey if you are not confident.

If you wish to participate in Red Feb month, find out heaps of super cool facts about your heart, how to look after it and the amazing research being done here is the link.
