Exercise Physiology

What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiologists specialise in helping people to get moving safely and confidently with a plan tailored to specific motivations, goals and ambitions. The fundamental aim is to reduce symptoms, improve function, and enhance quality of life through positive and sustainable lifestyle changes.

How does Exercise Physiology differ from Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists both utilise physical activity to support individuals in preventing, managing, or recovering from illness or injury, while also encouraging healthier lifestyles.

Despite this shared goal, their approaches differ. Physiotherapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and provide therapeutic treatment for a variety of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems.

At Newcastle Aquatic Physiotherapy, all our physios also specialise in Aquatic Physiotherapy, and their individual speciality areas.

In contrast, Exercise Physiologists focus on designing exercise programs aimed at improving strength and functional capacity across a broad spectrum of health conditions. Their work emphasises exercise-based treatment combined with education on health, physical activity, and behavioral lifestyle changes.

At Newcastle Aquatic Physiotherapy, our Exercise Physiologist, is going to leave the pool to the physios, and focus on land-based exercises and advice.
